Cornered cats: this is why sometimes they don’t climb out of a tree on their own

Cats do quite a few tricks, on Wednesday another one was stuck under a hood in Drunen. But also high in the tree and in a chimney they sometimes get stuck for hours. You would think that a cat always lands on her feet and knows the way down. But that is not always the case, how about that?

Hangover Charlie who was trapped in a chimney in Eindhoven for 24 hours and a cat for hours in the tree in Son en Breugel. These are reports for which the fire service regularly turns out.

It is precisely the warm places where cats like to hang out, says cat behavior expert Saskia van Heur from Tilburg. “They like to sit in things, to crawl into somewhere they feel safe. Or to climb up to see everything. But they don’t realize they can’t get out, they don’t think about it.”

“If they want to go down, they have to go down with their front legs first. Then they fall over.”

Once they are really high in the tree, they often can’t go back. “If they want to go down, they have to go down with their front legs first. Then they fall forward. So they stay put for safety.”

A cat does not always land on its feet. But they can turn in a trap, says Saskia. “That means that they often end up well, but not always. For example, if it’s just too close to the ground, they won’t be able to make the turn. And if it’s too high, they can come down really hard.”

“A cat needs to eat every day, so if it takes much longer, you better get help.”

We have already seen many examples at Omroep Brabant. For example, in Handel we had cat Miep. Cold, downpours and even her favorite food couldn’t get Miep down.

Bazin Jolanda Sijbers decided after many futile attempts to call in the help of the fire brigade. The rushed firefighters knew what to do with a cat in a tree. In the absence of an aerial platform, they sprayed Miep, anything but subtly, with a fire hose from the tree. She could finally be reunited with Jolanda.

In Eindhoven, after a long search, tomcat Charlie turned out to be stuck in a chimney in Eindhoven. The fire brigade barely got the animal out, it took them four attempts before the animal could be saved.

Kat Vinnie managed to crawl into a tube of a meter box in a store in Breda. The store owner heard the animal meowing and called the fire brigade. There was no way she could get the cat out, she only succeeded a day later, after she had put food in front of him. The creature finally stuck its head out of the hole into which it had disappeared. Then they were able to catch him.

In any case, a cat does not stay in a tree for a long time just for fun. “A cat needs to eat every day, so if it takes much longer, you better get help.” It is also possible that a cat is in pain and therefore withdraws. “But then the cat would rather crawl behind a box in the attic than in a tree. If they keep crawling away, then something is wrong.”
