It all happened in Peñarol-Colón de Santa Fe, valid for the sixth round of Group G of Copa Libertadores. All ‘Estadio Campeon del Siglo 30 minutes of injury time have been decreed in the second half. The reason? Half an hour from the end, on a score of 1-1, the match was suspended due to incidents between fans. The two fans, during the match, first teased each other with teasing and insults. As the minutes went by, tempers got on fire. Objects rained down and “hand-to-hand” clashes took place. Given the increasingly complicated situation, the referee, the Brazilian Anderson Daronco, therefore suspended the match for half an hour, with the players of the two teams who went under the sectors occupied by their fans in an attempt to calm the spirits and to be able to resume the meeting. A fence net separated the two opposing factions.
The match was able to resume when the Peñarol supporters were moved from that sector of the stadium near the fence. The environmental climate al Campeon del Siglo Montevideo has also overheated, not only for the well-known rivalry between the two fans, but also for the complicated situation of Aurinegros in the Libertadores group. The Gialloneri needed a victory against the Argentines (a success which then came in the 97th minute thanks to the goal of Hernan Menosse) to hope for third place and, therefore, in qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana. But the bad news came directly from Asunción, where Club Olimpia went on to win against Cerro Porteño. Moral of the story? Paraguayans third with 8 points and in Copa Sudamericana, Peñarol mocked and last with 7 points.
