Copa America: South American championship awarded to North America

The South American championship Copa America will be held in the USA in 2024. The unusual award is related to the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament in the summer of 2024 will feature the ten national associations of the CONMEBOL region in South America led by the current titleholder Argentina, as well as six of the best associations from the Nations League of the continental confederation CONCACAF as guests, both organizations announced on Friday.

The associations from North and Central America and the Caribbean are organized in CONCACAF. The tournament took place in this format in the USA in 2016.

Copa is also preparing for the World Cup

In the summer of 2026, the USA, together with Mexico and Canada, will host the World Cup for the first time with 48 teams.

The tournament will also serve as an organizational preparation. South America had to find a new host anyway after Ecuador handed back hosting of the tournament.

The two American continental associations also agreed on a far-reaching cooperation that also includes women’s football: In 2024, the four best CONMEBOL teams are to take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with twelve national associations.
