On Friday 4 March 2022, Gasunie (100% state participation), the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (on behalf of the German Federal Government), and RWE signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the joint construction of a terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Brunsbüttel site in Germany.
With an annual capacity of 8 billion m³, the terminal creates the opportunity to bring natural gas onto the German market from regions that are not accessible by gas pipelines. The terminal strengthens the existing European LNG landscape. It thus makes an important contribution to increasing security of supply and makes Northwestern Europe more independent of natural gas imports via pipelines.
In time, the intention is to convert the terminal so that green hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia can be imported.
Minister Kaag of Finance: “With the construction of the LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, the state participation of Gasunie is making an important contribution to safeguarding the European security of gas supply. A good step in reducing dependence on gas imports from Russia.”
Minister Habeck of the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate: “With the LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, we are responding to the latest geopolitical developments. We must reduce dependence on Russian gas. LNG terminals help to increase supply security in Germany and Europe. At the same time, we are preparing for the future by designing the terminals in such a way that green hydrogen or hydrogen derivatives (such as ammonia) can be imported at a later date.”
