Controversial containers at Christmas market get wooden cladding
The black containers that replace the Christmas chalets have been on the Christmas market for two years. Visitors think that they create a cold and chilly atmosphere, according to a survey. The containers will remain, but they will look different. Mieke Hoste, alderman for tourism: “We are going to dress the black units with wooden slats, and we are also going to install a wooden fence at the back, the back sides. Also the entrance to the Christmas market, where we opt for wooden gates.” (continue reading below the photo)
It is an investment of 200,000 euros. The Christmas market in Bruges is part of ‘Winter Glow’, which also includes a light walk. The traders in Bruges are also satisfied with the adjustment. Dirk Vanhegen, Bruges trade centre: “We are happy because we were stuck with it. At the other location, the Minnewaterpark where it was completely wood, we received more positive reactions than about the metal walls. And then we said: OK, if we can come up with a great solution together with the city of Bruges, together with Bruges Plus, why not?”
