Contractors with construction cranes by the sea alert for stormy weather
There are several large construction sites with towering cranes on the Oosteroever in Ostend. There is already a strong wind today but it will blow a lot harder. Wind speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour are predicted. Since the incident with a construction crane in Nieuwpoort in 2017, regulations and controls have become stricter.
“With the current forecasts, we are of course a bit more alert,” says Kris Vannecke of Verhelst Bouwmachines.
In December 2017 there was a serious accident with a crane in Nieuwpoort. Wind speeds just over 100 kilometers per hour caused a large crane to topple. The material damage was very extensive and one person was killed.
