Contested northern duel: St. Pauli scores, but so does Braunschweig

Although FC St. Pauli ended their 0-0 series, the draw series continued. After three goalless draws in a row, the second division soccer team drew 1-1 (0-0) in the north duel in Braunschweig on Friday evening. Newly signed Icelander Thorir Johann Helgason saved Eintracht a point.

So St. Pauli didn’t really make any progress on the fifth day of the game either. With seven points, the brown and white are in the middle of the table. They at least managed to avoid an inglorious record: there have never been four 0-0s in a row in the second division. Eintracht Braunschweig now has four points on the account.

Braunschweig relies immediately on the new forces

Two new players were already in the squad for Lower Saxony. In addition to Helgason, who initially sat on the bench, there was also attacker Florian Krüger, who was even a member of the starting XI. St. Pauli had become active on the deadline day of the summer transfer period: A few hours before the start of the game, Hamburg announced the signing of attacker Simon Zoller from Bundesliga club VfL Bochum. The 32-year-old was not in the squad in Braunschweig.

The guest fans were not in their block for the first five minutes. In this way they protested against “top game surcharges and rising ticket prices”. In the new season, Braunschweig have raised entry fees for five home games. A standing room ticket for these games costs four euros more than for the usual games.

St. Pauli went into the break 0-0 for the fifth time

For the first half, this top game addition was not justified. The entertainment value was low, there were only three chances to score. Eintracht striker Anthony Ujah had one. His shot from the turn was blocked by Karol Mets (22′). In the 35th minute, Ujah cleared in his own penalty area in front of Marcel Hartel, who was ready to score, and two minutes later Hamburg attacker Andreas Albers missed the goal – that’s it. In the fifth game of the season, St. Pauli went into the break 0-0 for the fifth time.

Saad breaks St. Pauli’s gate ban

After the restart, the game rippled along – until the 59th minute, when Elias Saad gave St. Pauli the lead. The 23-year-old, who joined from regional league club Eintracht Norderstedt last winter, also did really well. First he sent Danilo Wiebe with a quick body movement and then shot the ball through his opponent’s legs into the bottom left corner of the goal. After more than three and a half games, the brown and whites were finally able to celebrate a goal again.

Dream debut for Braunschweig’s new signing Helgason

And Hamburg had good opportunities to score another goal. Hartel missed from a good position (78th), shortly afterwards Saad failed to Ron-Thorben Hoffmann. The sloppy handling of the chances took revenge: After an insufficient attempt by the Mets to clarify, new signing Helgason, who had been substituted four minutes earlier, was spot on. The Icelander equalized to make it 1-1 and made a dream debut for himself (80′).

Eintracht then pushed for the winning goal, but it didn’t come despite eleven minutes of injury time. Bitter for St. Pauli: Scott Banks was eliminated in the 89th minute with a knee injury.
