A truck crane from a container ship hit the Julian J. Ewell Bridge near Veghel on Monday afternoon. The crane then fell into the Zuid-Willemsvaart, after which shipping traffic was stopped. In collaboration with divers, an attempt is made to lift the crane out of the water. A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat expects that shipping traffic can be resumed this afternoon.
The collision happened around three o’clock. The Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson assumes that the helmsman forgot to adjust the truck crane to the correct height. Now it was so high that it hit the bridge. Cars are loaded and unloaded onto a container ship using a truck crane.
Traffic on the A50 motorway, which uses the Julian J. Ewell Bridge near Veghel, is not affected by the work in the canal.
