Consumers beware – innovations and laws: This will change from November 2023

The world is changing and constantly evolving. Therefore, changes that consumers in Germany will be confronted with in November 2023 are presented below.

• New President of the Federal Council
• Apply for identification documents faster and easier
• Disney+ is becoming more expensive

Federal Council President Dr. Peter Tschentscher is replaced

The term of office of the previous President of the Federal Council, Dr. Peter Tschentscher ends on October 31, 2023. As President of the Federal Council, “he ran the business and chaired the plenary sessions of the constitutional body,” as the Federal Council website reveals. He was also a representative for the Federal Council both at home and abroad. Manuela Schwesig, the Prime Minister of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and current Second Vice President of the Federal Council, will take on this important task from November 1, 2023.

Simplified procedures for identification documents

From November 2023, applying for and issuing identification documents will be significantly simplified. Regardless of whether it is an ID card, passport or electronic residence permit: The digitalization will simplify the process. “We want to make people’s lives easier, save valuable time, put an end to paperwork and avoid administrative procedures,” said Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser in a press release from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. As of November 1st, it is sufficient to confirm receipt of the PIN letter for the online ID in text form. It is then possible to collect the ID document from a document issuing machine, provided these are available in the area. This saves you having to pick it up at the office.

Streaming service Disney+ is becoming more expensive

But things will not only change at the federal level in Germany. From November 2023, a subscription to the Disney+ streaming service will be more expensive. If you previously paid around nine euros a month, in the future it will be 12 euros a month. However, this is not the only change, as the only tariff currently available is now considered a “Premium” subscription, which is why cheaper alternatives can be taken out in the future. Similar to other streaming services, the cheaper versions and therefore also the standard version have limitations, such as a reduced resolution or a limited number of simultaneous streams. According to the streaming service, existing customers will be automatically upgraded – for how long remains to be seen.

Cell broadcast warning system also for older cell phones

The mobile phone alarm system using the Cell Broadcast warning system has been available on many cell phones since the beginning of the year, but older cell phones in particular were not compatible with the system for a long time. Due to increasing criticism, the technical specifications of the system were revised by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). From November 2023, it should now be possible for older generation mobile phones to also receive a warning message. But it’s not that easy yet, because owners of older devices have to independently set the broadcast used on their cell phone. And even then, warnings only appear in German.
