Opponents of the arrival of a new supermarket on the Borchsingel in Eelderwolde hope to be able to stop the construction of the retail property with nitrogen measures from the cabinet. However, the project developer wants to start as soon as possible, as it turned out today at the Council of State in The Hague.
The arrival of the supermarket divides the village of Eelderwolde in two. Some residents would like to see the 3,000 square meter store, while others fear more car traffic in the village and more accidents. Since 2018, there has been a heated discussion about the zoning plan and the environmental permit of the municipality of Tynaarlo for the new supermarket.
In the summer, the opponents lost an emergency session at the Council of State. However, two objectors have seized on the cabinet’s most recent nitrogen plans to challenge the arrival of the supermarket again. Part of the nitrogen plans is a map showing the areas in which nitrogen emissions must be significantly reduced in the coming years. It also includes the Onlanden nature reserve, which lies against Eelderwolde.
According to the objectors, car traffic to the new supermarket leads to more nitrogen emissions, which then precipitate in the Onlanden nature reserve. That is not allowed by the cabinet, so the supermarket plan must now be scrapped. “It is sour that if farmers in the area have to stop activities because of the nitrogen plans, the plan for the supermarket will continue,” said one of the objectors to the Council of State.
