Actress Constance Wu says she suffered from suicidal thoughts after getting into a social media scandal in 2019.
The uproar started when the actor known from the Fresh Off the Boat series wrote on Twitter that he regretted the continuation of the series.
Fans of the series interpreted Wu’s tweets as disrespectful to the series.
Now, Wu is back in the public eye for the first time in three years. Wu said in a long post on his Instagram account that he considered suicide amid the commotion.
The actor, who returned to social media, wrote that he was afraid of returning.
– I was afraid to return to social media because I almost lost my life because of it. When I posted thoughtless tweets about the continuation of the series three years ago, social media went into a frenzy and the cyberbullying got pretty serious.
Wu says he was sorry for what he said.
– When I received some private messages from an Asian actor saying that I was a disgrace to the Asian American community, I thought that I don’t deserve to live anymore.
– It’s crazy that a few private messages convinced me that I should end my life. Fortunately, my friend found me and rushed me to the emergency room.
The actor says that the scary experience made him reconsider his life.
– During the following years, I put my career aside and focused on my mental health.
