Congo denies Human Rights Watch allegations of suppression of opposition | Abroad

HRW believes that authorities are arresting opponents with vague charges and “obstructing their fundamental freedoms”. In a press release, the Ministry of Communications “categorically” denies those allegations.

The political climate in Congo is tense, with presidential elections looming on 20 December. At the same time, residents also elect their national and provincial representatives. The opposition claims that the government is organizing it “chaotically” and in a movement undermining the democratic process.

Twelve activists were recently arrested in the city of Goma when they spoke out against illegible electoral cards. They would still be stuck.
