Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart is planning its squad for the coming season after staying up. In focus: a new goalkeeper. Different reports are now circulating about interest in a goalkeeper from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
According to “Sport1”, VfB Stuttgart will not seek a commitment from Gladbach’s Tobias Sippel. Thus, the broadcaster contradicted reports from “Sky” and the “Rheinische Post”, according to which the substitute goalkeeper of Borussia is traded as a possible summer transfer from Swabia.
It is said that there were no talks with the 35-year-old Sippel either from the tenth place in the table last season or from VfB Stuttgart. The veteran had only extended his contract by another year until June 2024 last April.
Tobias Sippel is only the second force in Gladbach behind regular Jonas Omlin, who was signed in winter after Yann Sommer left. In addition, Borussia has 21-year-old Jan Olschowsky, who has meanwhile celebrated his Bundesliga debut.
Sippel moved from 1. FC Kaiserslautern to the Lower Rhine in 2015, but he was never able to fight for a permanent place between the posts. In the 2022/23 season, however, the right footer made six appearances in the Bundesliga and one in the DFB Cup.
Goalkeeper change at VfB Stuttgart is imminent
At VfB Stuttgart, the signs are pointing to a change in goal: According to media reports, both Fabian Bredlow and Florian Müller can leave the club in the summer. We are looking for a new number one with as much experience as possible. Neither of the two was able to provide lasting stability in the past season.
The “kicker” recently reported that SC Freiburg is interested in bringing Florian Müller back. In the 2020/21 season, when he was still employed by Mainz 05, he spent a season on loan for the sports club.
According to “Sky”, VfB Stuttgart has now targeted another experienced substitute in Alexander Meyer from Borussia Dortmund in order to close the goalkeeper construction site in the country.
