Confirmed: Salzburg brings Alexander Schlager back – contract until 2027

Free transfer from LASK

What has been speculated since the winter break has now been confirmed by series champions Red Bull Salzburg: the Mozart city-dwellers sign Austria’s national goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. The 27-year-old is coming back to Salzburg on a free transfer from third-placed LASK, where he was under contract as a youth between 2009 and 2014. He did make the leap into the professional squad at the time, but he was denied an assignment.

The goalkeeper then ended up at LASK in 2017 via Leipzig, Grödig and Floridsdorf, for whom he has played 213 games so far. Since the 2021/22 season he has also been captain of the Linzer. In December 2022, Schlager announced that he would not be extending his contract in Upper Austria, which expired at the end of the season.

Sports director Christoph Freund said of the new signing: “We are delighted with Alex’s decision and his move to us, which means that he is returning to the beginning of his career and is coming home again. With him we have a strong and experienced goalkeeper in the squad who should play an important role not only on the field but also in the dressing room. We appreciate his qualities as a goalie as well as a person and a leader.”
