There was recently a bobsleigh accident in Altenberg. The Swiss Sandro Michael was seriously injured. Now there is an update on his condition.
In the middle of the week there was a serious bobsleigh accident before the World Cup race in Altenberg, Saxony. The Swiss four-man bobsleigh piloted by Michael Vogt was affected. Pusher Sandro Michel was seriously injured. The “Swiss Sliding” association announced that he was taken to the Dresden University Hospital.
Now the association’s managing director, Roger Clavadetscher, told “Bild” regarding Michel’s condition: “He is responsive, but not yet fit for transport. We are glad that his life is out of danger.”
Severe chest injuries
The pusher underwent another operation on his hip area on Thursday due to his “serious injuries”. The association announced this in a press release. He is still in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital in Dresden.
Investigations have shown that Michel did not suffer any injuries to his head or spine. However, the 27-year-old suffered serious chest injuries. It is not yet clear when he will be able to leave the clinic and be transferred to Switzerland.
Michel was thrown out of the sled when the bobsled fell, lay on the track and was then run over by the sleigh.
The bobsleigh track manager in Altenberg, Jens Morgenstern, has contradicted criticism of the ice track that it is not safe. He said at a press conference: “I will not accept that Altenberg is now being portrayed as a bogeyman here. This is a global issue.”
There is never one hundred percent security. “I don’t think it’s acceptable that all the tracks in the world are solely responsible for the ongoing development of athletics and material,” Morgenstern continued. He also said to “Sport in the East” that there were no plans to rebuild the track.
