In Flanders, as much paving is added every year as the surface area of a city like Mechelen. Between 2013 and 2021, 15,000 hectares of paved land were added, or five hectares per day. This is stated in the Concrete Report of Breekijzer and Natuurpunt. Flanders wants to start softening with a concrete stop, but then agreements must be made with local authorities, the report says.
