Concerns about asbestos in the event of a major fire: ‘But there are no indications for that’

Residents living near the major fire in the Eindhoven city center are concerned about possible asbestos particles that could be released during the fire. But so far there are no indications that this is actually the case, says a spokesman for the fire service. Due to the thick smoke that is released, an NL-Alert has been sent out in the wider area.

In Eindhoven and far beyond, you can see that the building in the Lichtstraat is on fire. Because of the smoke: yellowish at first, later black, local residents are advised to go inside and stay indoors with windows and doors closed.

“It smelled awful.”

The area around the building has been cordoned off. As a result, a terrace had to be evacuated by order of the fire brigade. But guests from a music festival, for example, have also been sent home further away. “Because it smelled terrible,” says a staff member of a café on Wilhelminaplein.

It was also abundantly clear at Clausplein that staying outside could not be healthy. “We have closed our doors for tonight,” says the owner of Radegast 040 to Omroep Brabant.

“We looked around, but didn’t see any asbestos particles.”

Many of the people we speak to say they are concerned about possible asbestos particles. But those concerns are premature, says the fire service. “So far there is no reason to believe that there is asbestos. We have looked around but have not seen any asbestos particles here.”

This is how the fire looked at the beginning of the evening:
