That’s why Lukas Petkov is underestimated
As a native of Augsburg, Lukas Petkov romantically made his way through all the youth teams of FC Augsburg to the seniors, but the step into the Bundesliga seemed a bit too big for Petkov. From 2019 he played for the Augsburg reserve in the regional league, once he was allowed to play three minutes in the Bundesliga on the 34th matchday of 2020/21.
After a one-year loan to SC Verl, the now 21-year-old winger, who was never invited to a German U-national team, was no longer even considered by FCA.
That’s what makes Lukas Petkov so strong
Lukas Petkov has always been a relatively dangerous goal in the A youth and regularly provided assists, and he also managed the transfer to the seniors in the regional league relatively well. But last year, Petkov took things to the next level.
On his loan to SC Verl in the 3rd division, he contributed 16 direct goals, divided into eleven goals of his own and five assists. He was the top scorer at Verl and also one of the top scorers in the league.
Lukas Petkov has this potential
Petkov was injured in the pre-season – and still plays a major role in Enrico Maassen’s plans. Petkov was last substituted on twice. He used the eight minutes against Hertha for two points at Comunio with a long successful pass and a tackle won.
What also sets Petkov apart is his versatility: he can play both right and left wingers, and of course the two-footed player is also an option for the ten-man position. The big question will only be: Does Maassen dare – presumably in a relegation battle – to give young players like Petkov a real chance? The bet is always worth it, because with 380,000 Petkov could hardly be cheaper despite his last two bets.
As a homegrown player who has been lacing Augsburg’s boots since the tender age of eight, Petkov also has great potential to become a crowd favourite.
