The number of complaints about aircraft nuisance from people who live further away from Schiphol has increased in the past year. This is reported by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). In areas at a greater distance from Schiphol − outside the so-called noise contours of the airport − there are no rules about the maximum amount of nuisance the flights may cause.
Every year Schiphol calculates how many local residents are confronted with serious noise nuisance and sleep disturbance. This calculation is limited to residents who live in the vicinity of the airport.
Over the past two years, the number of severely hindered and awake local residents who live close to Schiphol decreased sharply due to the corona crisis.

Schiphol hinders housing construction
Municipalities around the airport would like to build new homes to meet the high demand, but are not allowed to do so because of the strict noise regulations in the vicinity of Schiphol. “This leads to pressure from society to build in places that are not always suitable for this,” says ILT Inspector General Jan van den Bos.
The ILT went to the . in February Council of State to stop a student housing project in Amstelveen. In Rijsenhout they want to get rid of the reservation of an extra runway, which hinders new housing construction.
