The South African Football Association wants to apply to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The managing director of the South African football association Safa confirmed to the German Press Agency that the decision had already been made at a meeting of the association at the weekend. An official announcement by the association and the world association FIFA is still pending.
Competition for Germany, Netherlands and Belgium
With its application, South Africa is competing with Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, who are jointly applying to host the World Cup. The German Football Association recently named Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne as candidate cities.
If South Africa’s bid is successful, it would be the first women’s soccer World Cup on the African continent. South Africa was the first African country to host a men’s World Cup in 2010.
African Cup won
Most recently, the South African women’s national team attracted attention with several successes. In 2019, the team took part in a world championship for the first time. That year the team won the African Championship.
