Airline Transavia also has to cancel flights from Eindhoven Airport in May and June due to a shortage of aircraft. Two thousand claims were filed this week after flights were canceled. One thing is certain: travelers get the money back for the flight and sometimes even an extra compensation is added.
Transavia canceled several flights from Eindhoven Airport this week. The airline is experiencing a shortage of aircraft. To give travelers clarity earlier, Transavia reported on Friday that it will also cancel flights in the months of May and June. But what rights do you have if you suddenly can no longer get to your holiday destination?
Booked a single flight
If your single flight is cancelled, you have two options:
- The airline will rebook the flight free of charge to a different departure date or time. If there is no alternative, another trip will be booked. Additional costs will be reimbursed. You may refuse a voucher.
- You can request your money back. This will be refunded within 7 days.
To achieve this, travelers often spend a long time on hold on the phone or spend hours searching the internet. You can therefore get help from a claims organization. The company submits a claim for the victimized traveler, according to the no-cure-no-pay principle. This means that the claim organization will only be paid once it has received the money back from the canceled flight.
Claims organizations were inundated with applications this week. In total, there would be about two thousand claims from duped travelers. According to the organizations, compensation for cancellations is between 250 and 400 euros per person.
Package tour booked
Travelers with a package holiday are luckier. You will be saved a lot of work. The travel agency is obliged to offer an alternative. “That could be a different departure time, a different airport, a flight with a different airline or, if necessary, a different destination,” explains Frank Radstake of the ANVR.
Additional costs for travel or accommodation are for the account of the travel agency, which in this case will try to recover it from the airline. However, you don’t just have to agree to a new destination, for example. “If there is a substantial change, you will receive the entire travel sum back.”
Reimbursement for additional costs
Are you already in a sunny place and suddenly you don’t come home anymore? In some cases you may be reimbursed for the costs of an extra night in a hotel or dinner abroad. This applies to travelers with single flights and travelers with package holidays.
Keep your receipt well and don’t make it too crazy. “Any extra nights or extra meals should be compared to the rest of the vacation,” says Radstake. Going out for a luxurious meal during your extra holiday day is therefore not an option.
