If you don’t feel like going to the gas stations in the neighborhood, you can compare fuel prices online. There are now various apps and websites for this purpose. TECHBOOK gives an overview of the best providers.
Hardly any other topic has shown greater potential for conflict over the past few decades than fuel prices. On the one hand, this is probably due to the fact that it affects many people and, on the other hand, that enormous fluctuations have been observed for some time. According to ADAC, 2012 was the most expensive year to date: a liter of Super E10 cost 159.8 cents at the time and 147.8 cents per liter for diesel. Motorists can currently only dream of these numbers. 2022 is about to become the most expensive year for fuel to date. It used to be common practice to check before filling up where it is currently particularly cheap and to wait if necessary, but this is now necessary for many. Checking fuel prices online or using an app saves a lot of work – and ultimately money.
The best tank apps
Refueling can quickly become really expensive. An app can be worthwhile for frequent drivers who need to keep an eye on prices all the time. Within a radius of a few kilometers, the petrol prices can sometimes differ significantly. Gas station operators are legally obliged to report their current prices to the relevant headquarters, the so-called market transparency office for fuel (MTS-K). It then makes the data available to the apps in real time.
One of the most popular and most recommendable apps is “clever-tanken” for Android and iOS. If you grant access to your own location, you can use the application to look at all gas stations and their current prices. Although the search radius is limited to a maximum of 25 kilometers, in most cases this is completely sufficient. In addition, “Clever tanken” also offers several statistical preparations for price developments. The app is free of charge, but users have to reckon with advertisements again and again.
The ADAC app, on the other hand, is ad-free and also for Android and iOS accessible. Users can also set an itinerary for longer journeys to see all gas stations along the way. The filter functions are a bit notchy, but still clear.

Those are just two tank apps you can use to check gas prices. In principle, the applications all work in a similar way and differ in detail primarily in their presentation. An app is particularly worthwhile if you drive a lot and often want to spontaneously compare fuel prices on the go.
Check fuel prices online
Most apps like “clever-fill upYou can also use it regularly via your browser. So if you want to save yourself the installation of an app and have no problem with the browser search, you can of course also query fuel prices online. Recommended here are, among other things, “Ich-tanke.de” or “RefuelRefuel!“. Compared to the apps, most websites offer fewer functions, especially in the area of statistical evaluations. But they show the price just as reliably.
The Bundeskartellamt lists 50 service providers who obtain real-time price information from the MTS-K. But be careful: there is no price guarantee! If necessary, the fuel price can change at very short notice after you have checked it online or via the app.
