Commuter allowance and Co.: This is how the traffic light wants to relieve citizens

It is the central building block of the package: as of July, citizens should no longer pay the EEG surcharge for the promotion of green electricity via their electricity bill. This step was originally planned for early 2023. The coalition expressly expects the energy suppliers to pass on the full amount of the relief to consumers – but that is not certain.

So far, the surcharge under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) has been 3.72 cents per kilowatt hour. According to calculations by the price portal Verivox, abolition in the middle of the year will ensure that a three-person household with an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours will save around 89 euros this year.

Households with an annual consumption of 6,000 kilowatt hours are therefore around 133 euros. However, it remains to be seen whether this can offset the general price increase. According to Lindner, the premature abolition will cost the federal government around 6.6 billion euros. The EEG surcharge is to be financed from the federal budget in the future.
