Community service for truck driver for causing serious accident in Emmen

A 49-year-old truck driver from Oude Pekela has been sentenced to 80 hours of community service for causing a serious accident in Emmen. The man was sentenced to 120 hours of community service.

In addition, the man was given a conditional driving ban for six months. This part is equal to the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service.

On September 17, 2021, the driver drove towards an intersection at too high speed on the Dordsestraat near Emmen. He drove 70 kilometers per hour, where 50 was allowed. The light was orange. The man accelerated a little more to get through that light. When the trailer passed the traffic light, the light turned red.

The truck struck a van. The driver suffered twelve broken ribs and a bruised heart. There were fears for the man’s life.

The public prosecutor found evidence of very careless driving. The judge rules somewhat more leniently and assumes inattention. This makes the penalty slightly lower.
