Community service demanded against the driver of a delivery van who fell asleep on the A28 near Assen

The public prosecutor is demanding 180 hours of community service and a six-month driving ban against a 35-year-old driver of a delivery van. The man fell asleep while driving on the A28 near Assen in March last year and therefore did not adjust his speed, causing him to collide with the car in front of him. That’s what the prosecutor said during the hearing.

After the accident, the thirty-year-old took off, he also turned out to be driving uninsured. The Nunspeter did not appear before the judges in Assen today. “That’s a pity, I had some questions for him,” said the judge, “Why did he run away after the accident, for example?”

The driver was found some time later in the Thorbeckelaan in Assen, after the location of his mobile phone was found. The man told officers he was in shock. “But in the meantime he had called his father and texted someone about falling asleep and that indicates a form of consciousness,” said the judge.

According to witnesses, the Nunspeter drove too fast. The impact on the vehicle in front caused the front car to launch and end up in the ditch. A 76-year-old woman and 82-year-old man in that car suffered broken bones, including a vertebral fracture. The elderly man has still not fully recovered. “It’s a wonder it didn’t end worse,” said the prosecutor.

“He didn’t care about the victims and walked away. This is despicable behavior,” the prosecutor said. The driver still had traces of drugs in his blood from a few days ago. Too little to affect his driving ability. He did not have a drug or drinking problem, the man told the officers.

Remarkably, the man has already been convicted three times for driving under the influence. It has not been determined to what extent the Nunspeter drove too fast.

The court will rule in two weeks.
