Community center De Poort disappointed in the municipality of Assen: ‘Storage space outside is nothing’

Very grumpy at Community Center De Poort in Assen-Oost. They are disappointed in the municipal council. In their opinion, this comes with a ‘nothing solution’ for their storage problems that have been going on for years.

The PvdA faction in the Asser municipal council had asked questions about the issue. At the beginning of December, he wanted clarification from the mayor and aldermen as to why a quick solution could not be found for the ‘excessive space shortage’ of the Eerste Asser Playground Association (EAS), which has its seat in the De Poort community center.

They now often have to drag tables and chairs to an overcrowded storage attic, via two narrow stairs. The furniture gets in the way of special activities. The floor is then cleared, and everything has to go upstairs. There is no room anywhere else. And that is an unsafe job for people, the board believes. The playground association would also like to design part of the attic as a ‘kids area’, so that children have a permanent room upstairs, with their own things. But according to the board, there is absolutely no room for that now.

According to the board of the playground association, the lack of space can be solved in one fell swoop on the ground floor, and efficiently, because the solution is located right next to the activity room. “You only have to tap out one thin plaster wall,” says the club. Behind that plaster wall is a classroom of a school building that has been vacant for a long time.

“A handy space for us to store chairs and tables and other items,” says De Poort. “You can slide them from the hall into that room, very practical.”

But the municipality does not like that. According to the mayor and aldermen, the school and community center are attached to each other, ‘but they are two separate buildings, each with their own entrance’. “If part of it is used to solve the lack of space, the school building will be less usable,” says the municipal executive.
