He usually speaks the highest word, ara Bailey from Ardy van de Steeg from Emmen, but yesterday afternoon it was suddenly quiet in her home on Schansstraat. The bird appears to have flown away against all odds. “It has clipped wings, I did not expect it to fly away, I was completely panicked,” says Van der Steeg.
It is Tuesday afternoon around a quarter to five when the fire brigade in Emmen is called to catch an escaped macaw. According to the reporter of the missing person, the bird is in a tree on Schansstraat, but when the fire brigade arrives there, the animal cannot be found. The fire brigade returns empty-handed to the barracks. But this is not the end of the stocking.
Just after seven o’clock, the fire brigade received a report that the bird in question is in a tree on the ring road. “He just sat there talking and talking,” says owner Ardy. “I taught him all that, then he says ‘hello mom’, ‘kiss’ and a lot of ‘yes’ and ‘no’, he has whole conversations, picks up words very quickly.”
But the fire brigade again fails to catch Ardy’s talkative buddy. “It was too high,” said a spokesman for the fire service. “The environment there is not suitable for working with the cherry picker, so we left again.”
