The cabinet has sent the establishment decision of the Kabul Evacuation Operation Committee to the House of Representatives. The Commission will investigate the evacuation operation from Kabul, which the Netherlands conducted in the second half of August 2021, after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan.

The committee will independently and at its own discretion conduct an investigation into the Dutch evacuation operation from Kabul. Attention will also be paid to the agreement between the United States and the Taliban of February 2020, the Dutch intelligence position, the preparatory evacuation plans, the implementation of the relevant parliamentary motions, communication and cooperation between the ministries involved, the course of the evacuation operation, and the possible international legal consequences.

The committee can make recommendations based on its findings and conclusions. Besides chairman Maarten Ruys, the committee members are Pieter Bindt, Renée Jones-Bos, Henk Lubberdink and Pauline Meurs. The committee will publish its report and present it to the cabinet by 31 May 2023 at the latest.
