Commentary after Nations League games: Caution advised

The Nations League can check off the DFB-Elf for the time being. The competition doesn’t resume until September – but after that there’s not much time left before the World Cup in Qatar. The German team has to be careful.

The summer break begins with a football festival, a 5-2 win against European champions Italy. After the fourth international match in just under two weeks, it’s now time for the German national players: vacation.

Italy, England, Hungary and Italy again – and that after an exhausting season. It is understandable that some players, especially in the first three games, were no longer able to call up their full potential – but that was not to be expected.

The second game against Italy? convincing. Suddenly even Timo Werner, who recently had so much bad luck in the final, scored. And even twice. But the truth is: The DFB team was only able to cause a storm of enthusiasm among its fans in this game against a renewed European champion.

National coach Hansi Flick is now running out of time. The ex-Bayern coach only has three more games to bring the German team into absolute World Cup form. A big challenge.

Good for those who have a Manuel Neuer in goal

There has been little sign of the initial optimism that Flick was able to spread after the long era of Jogi Löw, so you shouldn’t be blinded by the performance in Mönchengladbach on Tuesday evening. Because: The fact that Germany only conceded two goals in the end was mainly due to a world-class performance by captain Manuel Neuer.
