During the Haarlem Comic Strip Days, two masters of fantasy comics drew a cartoon character ‘live’. The copy will be auctioned online this week and the proceeds will go towards medical aid to victims of the war in Ukraine.
“A quatre-mains on paper”, that is how the well-known Dutch cartoonist Paul Teng considers the action he undertook today with the Polish master of comics Gregorz Rosiński. The term refers to a piano piece played by two pianists. The fact that two cartoonists draw on one sheet of paper is unique, so the auction is expected to generate quite a bit of money.
fantasy
The theme of the postponed anniversary edition of the comics festival in Haarlem is fantasy. This genre of comics emerged between the two world wars. Often in fantasy stories, such as in The Cronicles of Narnia, war is present. The fact that a war is being waged in Europe in close proximity was all the more reason to hold the benefit campaign.
The polka dot figure that Rosiński and Teng drew today had of course to be the brave king’s daughter Sioban. Both artists are participating in the series ‘The Complaints of the Lost Regions’, in which Sioban plays the leading role.

Parts of the series ‘The Lamentation of the Lost Regions’ are exhibited in the exhibition space Sewing Atelier in the Spaarnwouderstraat in Haarlem. There the ‘live’ drawing action of Monday afternoon was filmed by Paul Teng and Gregorz Rosiński. The video can be seen from tomorrow via the website of the Comic Strip Days Haarlem† There it will be announced when and how the auction will take place.
