Comedian Russell Brand charged with rape in the US

British comedian, actor and radio host Russell Brand has been charged with rape in the US. He was supposed to be on the set of the movie Arthur forced a woman to have sex. Earlier this year, Brand was also accused in the British press of rape, sexual misconduct and emotional abuse, after which the police started an investigation.

In the indictment the woman describes how Brand allegedly showed his genitals to her on the film set, in full view of others. Later that day, Brand allegedly chased the woman into the toilet and forced her to perform oral sex there, while a production employee stood guard at the door.

Anonymous due to career anxiety

The offenses Brand is accused of date back to 2010. However, the woman can still file a lawsuit, due to a law in New York state that extends the statute of limitations for rape and other sexual violence. The state passed the Adult Survivors Act in 2019. The woman, who remains anonymous in the complaint for fear of damage to her career, is demanding damages of an unknown amount.

The stand-up comedian and Hollywood actor struggled with drug and sex addiction for a long time. After kicking the habit, he pivoted and ran committed campaigns against inequality, climate change and addiction. During the corona pandemic he made another swing and ended up in the camp of corona deniers and conspiracy theorists.
