Comeback in the Bayern goal: Is Manuel Neuer already playing against Darmstadt?

As of: October 10, 2023 11:23 a.m

Manuel Neuer’s comeback is getting closer. The FC Bayern goalkeeper wants to be back between the posts at the next home game at the latest.

It has been 303 days since Manuel Neuer set off on a momentous ski tour. 303 days since he fell, broke his tibia and was flown by helicopter to the hospital. 303 days in which there was speculation as to whether the captain of FC Bayern and the German national team would even play professional football again.

Neuer’s plan: comeback against Darmstadt

It always looked like a comeback was imminent. But every piece of good news was soon followed by bad news. Now the setbacks should be over. If Neuer himself has his way, the 37-year-old will be back in goal for the next home game at the latest. On October 28th, the Munich team will host SV Darmstadt. In between there are two away trips to Mainz (Mainz 05 against FC Bayern, October 21st, at 6:30 p.m. in the radio report) and Istanbul (Galatasaray against FC Bayern, October 24th, 6:45 p.m. in the radio report).

Sports director Christoph Freund also promised Manuel Neuer’s imminent comeback in goal for FC Bayern Munich: “There’s no pressure, but things are looking really good there too,” said Freund. Neuer will use the international break to complete a lot of training sessions, including some with the U23s. “So that he can get on the pitch and get rhythm,” said Freund.

Friend: “Believe it will happen soon”

“We’re very positive about that. Whether it’s the next game, the one after that or another game, we’ll see,” said the 46-year-old friend afterward Munich’s 3-0 win against SC Freiburg. “We believe that will happen in a timely manner.” On Sunday, Neuer was already in the Munich Arena – but still in the stands. Recently, coach Thomas Tuchel also emphasized Neuer’s progress. “I was very impressed by the last few training sessions, by his aura and charisma and quality,” said the 50-year-old.

De Ligt returns – Upamecano leaves

After the international break, central defender Matthijs de Ligt (24) should also be back. After his knee injury, the Dutchman is not traveling to the national team. “He’s staying here, taking advantage of the international break. Things are looking a little better now. There’s been some progress in the last two or three days. We’re very positive about that,” said Freund. Dayot Upamecano, however, left the French national team injured.

Bayern newcomer Raphaël Guerreiro also has to work on his next comeback. The 29-year-old Portuguese suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh. After tearing a muscle bundle in the summer, the former Dortmund player had only appeared twice for Munich in the DFB Cup at Preußen Münster at the end of September and a week ago in the Bundesliga at RB Leipzig. “We hope it doesn’t take too long,” said Freund. Serge Gnabry is also still missing after breaking his arm.
