In December, the AquaDom in the “Radisson Collection Hotel” burst.
A million liters of salt water poured through the hotel lobby and into the DDR Museum exhibition. This is partly under the hotel. The water was ankle-deep.
The cost of the privately run museum: 1.5 million euros. Since negotiations with the insurance company are still ongoing, managing director Quirin Graf Adelmann had to finance it himself.
“If we were dependent on state aid, it would take much longer. We are independent and don’t have to explain anything to anyone,” says Director Gordon Freiherr von Godin happily. The reopening is on Saturday, April 1st.
The museum used the forced renovation to heave a total of six meters of wall into the museum. Now there are also the new areas “Propaganda”, “German Division” and “DDR compact”. The 8,000 exhibits were donated, and the museum receives calls with offers every day.
Due to the high rental prices in Mitte, the museum has a warehouse in Spandau with 310,000 other objects. Despite the high renovation costs and increased energy prices, the museum is not planning any ticket price increases.
Daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., from 7 euros, tickets via ddr-museum.de or on site
