In 1980 there were 811 municipalities in the Netherlands. As of January 1, this year, there were 345 left. The national government has been aiming for a reduction in the number of municipalities for years and a number of them disappear every year due to reclassifications and mergers. The idea is that the local government gains more clout if municipalities are larger.
