Medland tweets that Marko said there is one more, but even bigger, obstacle in the way of the Herta transfer. Herta does not have the super license needed for the F1 series.
– Helmut Marko just told me that he has agreed on Colton Herta joining the F1 series IF he gets the FIA super license. The agreement is to be announced at Monza.
The race in Italy is already next weekend, so Herta and Gasly’s transfers may be announced soon.
The super license is the highest classification driving license issued by the international automobile association FIA. To get it, the driver must have collected 40 super license points over the previous three seasons.
Different series have different multipliers for the accumulation of super license points. In the IndyCar series, 40 points from one season are awarded to the series champion, lower places get fewer points.
Herta finished third in IndyCar in 2020 and fifth in 2021. With them, he has only 28 points on his account. This year’s results are no exception
The super license was introduced a couple of years ago to prevent completely unskilled drivers from entering the F1 series.
The FIA has the option to grant Herta an exception to the license, even if the account does not have enough points. The Red Bull camp clearly trusts this exemption.
The American-owned F1 has wanted a Yankee driver for years. The previous American F1 driver was seen in the 2015 season when Alexander Rossi drove five races in the Manor stable.
