The day of support of the fans at Colo Colo, two days before the derby against Universidad Catolica, almost ended in the worst way after the fall of a billboard at the Monumental Stadium.
The wait for a new Superclásico of Chilean football is total. A string of achievements could give Gustavo Quinteros’ team a new title this weekend. This is why the Colo Colo fans mobilized at the Monumental Stadium in Santiago de Chile to give an Arengazo to their players engaged in training: harangue them, load them up, in view of the derby. But the initiative was not successful, after the fall of a stadium structure which caused several injuries.
The stadium comes down, just like that …
The Monumental Stadium is located in the municipality of Macul, in Santiago de Chile and can accommodate more than 47,000 people. The incident took place in the Cordillera grandstand, because a group of the 10,000 fans present positioned themselves above an advertising sector, which could not resist the weight and ended up giving way. At the moment there is no confirmation on the number of injured, but the Chilean media assures that there are no victims.
The most successful team in Chile is in first position in Chilean football with 54 points, while behind them are Curicó Unido and Ñublense with 43 points. The tournament is only five games to go, so if Colo Colo defeats the Universidad in the derby and its pursuers don’t win, then it can win the Chilean title number 33 in its history, breaking the dominance of the Universidad Catolica that won the last four championships.
