College Midden-Groningen allocates 1.4 million for nature

The Municipal Executive of Central Groningen has asked the city council to make an extra 1.4 million euros available for greenery. The municipality wants to use this extra money to improve the maintenance in the municipality.

The council has reserved an extra 2 million euros for the management and maintenance of municipal green areas, roads, bridges and viaducts for 2023 and the coming years.

In recent years, however, too little money has been available for municipal green areas, which has resulted in many complaints and reports. That is why the municipality has started adjusting the plan for the management and maintenance of nature.

The municipal executive wants to improve the quality and maintenance of the green and asks the city council to make 1.4 million euros of the 2 million euros available for green before 2023.

Plans for roads, bridges and viaducts will be made in the autumn of 2023. Then the municipal executive and the municipal council will make an integral assessment between the 3 plans.

Alderman Patricia Nieland-Kampen: “We have beautiful nature and lots of water, playgrounds, parks, cycling and hiking trails in Central Groningen. But additional maintenance is urgently needed. Almost a third of all Fixi reports about public space are about green. With this extra money we can ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy all the beauty that Central Groningen has to offer.”

On April 6, 2023, the city council will decide on the green plan.
