College Aa en Hunze approves plan for new Rolde supermarket

The mayor and aldermen in Aa and Hunze have approved the preliminary design of a new supermarket in Rolde.

The new branch of supermarket chain Albert Heijn will be located on the location of the former Hotel Erkelens, in the heart of the village.

There is currently a temporary parking lot at that location, to relieve the supermarket’s tight parking lot. The new parking spaces will be located on the site of the current supermarket building. That will be demolished.

According to councilor Ivo Berghuis (Municipal Interests), the design has been adjusted on a number of points after criticism from residents. The new supermarket will have one entrance and exit, instead of the desired two entrances. The idea to house another store in the same building was also dropped.

There has been dissatisfaction in Rolde about the new supermarket in the past. Many residents were disappointed at the demolition of the hotel, although there were also positive comments. After demolition, the site lay fallow for years: an eyesore for the villagers.

It is not yet known when construction of the supermarket can start. The new design will be available for inspection in the near future. In addition, the municipal council still has to make a decision on the zoning plan.
