Dutch professional footballer Bas Dost suffers from an inflamed heart muscle. That was also the cause of his sudden collapse on Sunday (November 29th, 2023).
The former Bundesliga professional announced this on Thursday on the website of his club NEC Nijmegen. The 34-year-old striker collapsed in the final stages of the game against AZ Alkmaar and had to be resuscitated on the pitch. He was then taken to the hospital.
“I was lucky that I was successfully resuscitated on the pitch,” wrote Dost. He is deeply grateful to the doctors from both clubs. According to him, it is still unclear what the cause of the inflammation is.
Longer recovery break for Dost
The former Bundesliga professional from VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt wants to fully recover with his family in the next few weeks. Only then will he be able to say more about his future as an active footballer.
The away game was abandoned in the 90th minute when the score was 2-1 for Nijmegen. The game is scheduled to finish on December 6th.
