More than 60 costumes from film and television are going under the hammer.
The white shirt that Colin Firth wore as Mr. Darcy is being auctioned in London. The actor wore the famous garment in the BBC series adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which was released in 1995.
The shirt is estimated to be worth around 11,700 euros
The wet shirt scene didn’t appear in Austen’s book, but that didn’t stop it from becoming an iconic movie moment. It shows Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) spontaneously going for a swim in a lake before running off in his soaking wet white top and meeting his lover Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle).
In addition to the (now dry) shirt, which could be sold for 10,000 pounds (around 11,700 euros), outfits from Madonna, Margot Robbie and Johnny Depp will also be auctioned, with all proceeds being donated to charity. The costumes in the auction all come from the archives of the costume house Cosprop, which was founded by Oscar-winning designer John Bright.
Auction is for a good cause
Other looks up for auction include the Christian Dior ball gown worn by Madonna in Evita, estimated at up to £60,000, and Drew Barrymore’s suit in Forever ” and Meryl Streep’s dress and cape in “The French Lieutenant’s Mistress.” Costumes from television series such as “Poldark”, “Peaky Blinders” and “Downton Abbey” will also go under the hammer at the auction on Tuesday, March 5th.
Cosprop donated the costumes to support the Bright Foundation – an arts education charity founded and funded by John Bright to provide creative experiences for disadvantaged children and young people. The designer said in a press release: “I firmly believe that art and creativity lead to happier and healthier children and enable young people to reach their full potential.”
