At the Gothenburg gig, Chris Martin surprised everyone with a cover version of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”.
On Saturday (July 8th) Coldplay played in Gothenburg, Sweden. At the same time, Elton John gave the final concert of his farewell tour in Stockholm and was honored with a cover version of “Rocket Man” by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin via video link. But that wasn’t the only song the Coldplay singer covered that night. Martin also performed an acoustic version of the song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” by the Backstreet Boys on the piano.
His interpretation of the classic from the nineties was apparently well received by the concert-goers. Loud and lyrical, the audience joined in after recognizing the song’s intro and sang the chorus together:
Everybody, yeah
Rock your body, yeah Everybody, yeah Rock your body right Backstreet’s back, alright
The choice of this cover may have some connection to Swedish pop songwriters Max Martin and the late Denniz Pop. In the early days of the Backstreet Boys’ career, the band flew to Sweden to record songs with Martin and Denniz. They both also wrote and produced the hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”.
