It promises to be a clear and cold Saturday night. 2 to 5 degrees of frost is expected in Brabant. Even if it’s just for a while, that also means the season of scratching car windows has started. Many people are not exactly happy about this, because it is always necessary if it just doesn’t suit you.
Of course you forget to set the alarm five minutes earlier. Only going out on a Sunday morning with frozen windows is not wise. The low temperatures are already being taken into account on many roads: for the first time this autumn, large-scale sprinkling (with salt) has taken place.
Don’t panic, you can probably go ice-free again after Sunday morning. Because after the necessary sun, periods of rain will follow later in the day. The temperature is around four degrees in the afternoon. The changeable and fairly mild weather will return after the weekend. The temperature rises to about ten degrees and it rains for some time every day.
However, it is a misunderstanding that you only have to scratch when your thermometer shows frost. This has to do with a phenomenon that weather experts call ‘inversion’. Uuuh what? Specialists from Weerplaza explain it in the video below.

Drive safely and avoid a fine
Driving with poor visibility because you have not properly de-iced the windows of your car is not only dangerous, but it can also earn you a hefty fine. Thanks to the following tips from the ANWB, you will also be on your way quickly and safely on Saturday and Sunday. Also useful to remember in case it gets even colder.
- Use an anti-ice blanket. While your neighbor is scratching his head, you pull the blanket off your windshield and get into your car whistling happily.
- Also extremely efficient: the window defroster. Spray this stuff on the top of your windows and the ice will disappear like snow in the sun.
- Prefer to get started with the ice scraper? Then place it diagonally against the window. This is the easiest way to get rid of the ice. Take your rear window with you, even if you have rear window heating. This way you have a view of the traffic behind you immediately upon departure.
- Do you want to use your windshield wipers? Then tap it loose with the ice scraper. This way you prevent damage if the wiper rubbers are frozen.
- Knock snow or ice off your clothes before getting in; this prevents condensation. Switch off the recirculation mode and wipe the inside of the windows with a cloth or chamois leather.
- Last but not least: start the engine after you have cleared your windows of ice; the ventilation only blows warm air when the engine is warm. In addition, a cold engine consumes extra petrol and is bad for the environment.
