De Nieuwe Veste in Coevorden knew yesterday that a person with a firearm may have wanted to enter the school. A report about this was received at the secondary school at the end of the morning.
“We responded to this seriously and were extra alert,” a school spokesperson said. “We are pleased that the police were quickly called in. The safety of employees and students is guaranteed.”
The police arrested two suspects in Coevorden yesterday afternoon, after one of them was seen with a firearm earlier in the day. During the arrest, the police also found that firearm.
It is unclear what the firearms suspect would want to look for at the school. “It is not a familiar face at school, I understand. We know nothing else,” says the spokesperson. “Our attention was on safety. We are happy that the report was received and action was taken.” A number of people present within the school reacted with shock. “That has been our main priority,” he emphasizes.
A police spokesperson reports that both suspects are still in custody. It is unclear why one person carried a weapon and what the role of the co-suspect was. Several stories circulated about both: shots were said to have taken place at De Nieuwe Veste and the pair were said to be on their way to more schools.
