In the first quarter of the year, residents of the municipality of Coevorden collected an average of 14.3 kilos of residual waste per inhabitant. That is more than half less than in the same period last year, the municipality notes.
At the beginning of this year, the municipality of Coevorden started a new waste system. To make the system cost -effective, the price for emptying a gray container was increased by 35 percent, to 9.60 euros. At the same time, the municipality wanted to encourage residents to better separate waste. Last year 145 kilos of residual waste per inhabitant was collected, the goal is that this was below one hundred kilos in 2028.
“It is nice to see that the residual waste in our municipality has fallen considerably,” says alderman Jeroen Huizing (CDA). “Residents are more consciously busy separating their waste. This helps to reuse valuable materials. It is good for the environment and ultimately also good for the resident’s wallet.”
Most households in Coevorden offered their gray container once or twice in the first quarter. In addition, residents use the underground containers, on average 7.6 times per household. What is new is that the municipality collects diapers separately. Yet Coevorden sees that there are still diapers in the residual waste.
Where less residual waste is collected, remarkably enough, the amount of GFT, PMD and paper is not increased. Research does show that there is less pollution in green and plastic waste.
