Coevorden passes the cultural (walking) baton to De Wolden

It is now De Wolden’s turn. Last night Coevorden passed on the ‘walking stick’ to the new Cultural Municipality of Drenthe. After numerous theater plays, exhibitions, book publications and so on, it’s over for Coevorden. During a colorful evening in the Hof van Coevorden, all events and past affairs in the cultural field passed in review.

Since 2002, the province of Drenthe has chosen a municipality that can put itself in the cultural spotlight for a year – or a little longer. In June 2021, then mayor Bert Bouwmeester handed over the baton from Midden-Drenthe, which bore the title name ‘Cultural Municipality of Drenthe’ for two years. Due to the corona restrictions – which made many activities impossible – that municipality attached a second one after one year.

The ‘passing the baton’ from the cultural municipality to the successor took place with a specially designed walking stick. It refers to the cultural path designed in Coevorden, which leads in more than two hundred kilometers through the Coevorder villages and past museums, galleries and other cultural elements. “This baton has so much symbolism,” says Roelie Lubbers, culture project leader of the municipality of Coevorden. “It gets people moving. Moreover, we also want to support De Wolden with the walking stick successor. Because if things don’t go the way you want, it gives you a push.”
