Minima in the municipality of Coevorden normally receive a contribution of ten euros for their health insurance – better known as municipal policy – but this will be doubled to twenty euros next year. With this, the municipality wants to offer more support to people with a small wallet. This doubling applies for a trial period of one year.
“On average, the most popular basic insurance policies increase by about ten euros per month, some insurance policies even less,” says alderman Joop Slomp. “In this way we hope to be able to offer the residents with a minimum income a helping hand and the residents will even have something left over.”
The municipality expects that this will result in more residents using the municipal policy. Seven hundred residents have used it so far. Due to the increased contribution, the number is expected to rise to eight hundred.
For the municipality, this means that instead of the estimated 94,500 euros for the municipal policy, they must reserve an amount of 192,000 euros. The health insurers that participate in the municipal policy of the municipality of Coevorden are Univé and Zilveren Kruis. They will ensure a suitable campaign during the transition period and inform existing participants about the increased municipal contribution.
After the trial period, the doubling of the contribution will be reviewed. “We also have an investigation into the total minima policy,” says alderman Slomp. “At the beginning of 2024 we will look at what has worked and see what is still needed by then.”
