Code yellow coming: end of the drought or a drop in the ocean?

It finally seems to be raining. A little bit of precipitation fell in Hilversum this morning, but on Tuesday evening it really seems to break loose: rain, thunderstorms and hail. KNMI has declared code yellow for the entire province.

It drought record was broken last Thursday. Besides enjoying the beach, barbecuing and taking boat trips, the drought also had a downside. Plants and roadsides have withered and wildfires are on the rise: nature is desperate for some water.

And that will come, but not yet today, says weatherman Jan Visser. “The wind direction has changed, there is now an old-fashioned northwest wind again. As a result, it is a lot cooler than in recent days. It is still cloudy this morning, but the sun will shine more in the afternoon,” says Visser.

Code yellow

Tomorrow evening the most rain will fall. Code yellow will apply from 6 or 7 pm. The entire province will then have to deal with thunderstorms that move into the country from the south. There is also a chance of rain, hail and gusts of wind up to 70 kilometers per hour. In addition to code yellow, the Weeronline site gives another other warning: the one for slippery roads. Because it has been dry for a long time, a layer has formed on the road surface. That layer consists of pieces of rubber, oil and other dust particles. When it rains, this layer comes loose and creates slippery conditions.

The wet weather doesn’t last long. After Tuesday, a new period of drought will start for the majority of the province. Temperatures will rise to 25 degrees again and the sun will show itself again. “Nature may have had some precipitation, but actually still too little. There is a very local chance of a small shower, but we prefer to see a day, 24 hours, of rain. That is not possible for the time being.” said the weatherman.
