Code orange on Wednesday morning due to slipperiness and five centimeters of snow

Code orange is in force in the southeast of Brabant on Wednesday morning, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) reported on Tuesday evening. More than two inches of snow can fall. Roads may be slippery due to snow, which is expected to fall from late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Traffic must therefore expect serious delays.

From the end of the night it will snow from the southeast. Code orange applies from 06:00 to 12:00, according to the KNMI. In Limburg, the warning level starts at 04:00 in the morning.

The KNMI issues code orange if “there is a high probability of dangerous or extreme weather with a major impact and a risk of damage, injury or a great deal of nuisance”. That nuisance can also be very local.

Drive carefully and check traffic information before departure, Rijkswaterstaat warns. According to the KNMI, there is a high risk of accidents due to slippery roads, bridges and bicycle and footpaths when slippery due to snow. Minor roads may be impassable and may be closed.

The advice is that road users should drive more slowly and keep more distance from other road users. “Make sure you have food, drink and warm clothing on the way. And in the car for a blanket and a flashlight.”

Temporarily over in the afternoon
The slipperiness is temporarily over on Wednesday afternoon, the KNMI expects. In the night from Wednesday to Thursday it can again become slippery locally due to (wet) snow again.

Tuesday morning it also rained and snowed in our province. It made for the busiest morning rush hour of the year. Around eight o’clock there was more than a thousand kilometers of traffic jams throughout the Netherlands. The evening rush hour was also much busier than usual.
