The Agency for Nature and Forests warned on Wednesday with a risk code orange of a high risk of wildfires in the provinces of Antwerp and Limburg. Code yellow applies in Flemish Brabant, West and East Flanders, which indicates an increasing risk of fire in the forest and nature areas. The warning follows the dry and sunny weather, with light winds, recently.
The orange risk code applies in Limburg and Antwerp. “It is very dry and dangerous in nature. Be careful, do not smoke in nature and forest areas. Do not leave children unsupervised in the area. Making fire is prohibited,” says Natuur en Bos on its website.
Nature managers and fire brigade are very vigilant. If a wildfire breaks out, the fire brigade is reinforced. More equipment and manpower will be deployed. The manning of the fire towers depends on the risk assessment by Natuur en Bos and the fire services, it goes on to say.
The warning relates to all forest and nature reserves of Natuur en Bos in these provinces. “The fire hazard in the forest and nature areas of other public authorities such as provinces and municipalities, or of private owners, is of course similar.”
In the other Flemish provinces, the nature managers are vigilant. “Nature is starting to get drier, increasing the risk of wildfires,” the agency said.
