Coalition change in Wervik: Vooruit dumps Open VLD, mayor can stay on as a result

Normally, after 4 years, Casier would pass the torch to Bert Verhaeghe of the city list ‘Open Vld-Green-Positive Project’. By dropping that party now and joining forces with the current opposition party CD&V, Casier can stay on. Together they have 16 of the 25 seats.

After the most recent elections, Vooruit went into business with ‘Open Vld-Green-Positive Project’. In the administrative agreement, first alderman Bert Verhaeghe (City List Open Vld-Green-Positive Project) would become mayor after four years for another two-year period. But that’s not happening now. The city list ‘Open Vld-Green-Positive’ is being moulted for CD&V.

Constructive vote of no confidence

Today Vooruit and CD&V submitted a constructive motion of no confidence against the majority Vooruit & ‘Open VLD – Positive Project – Green’. According to Vooruit, cooperation in the college was difficult, which she believes would be disadvantageous for Wervik in the long run. After talks, Vooruit and CD&V said they “came to a positive collaboration where there was room for each of them to have their own ideas and concerns. †

Bercy Slegers, Tom Durnez and Yves Obin will be the new aldermen for CD&V until the end of 2024. And Mayor Youro Casier will remain in office, as will Aldermen Geert Bossuyt and Lien Deblaere. Previously, coalition changes were also made in Blankenberge and Langemark-Poelkapelle through motions of no confidence.
